Greece, land of the Olympians, Gods and Immortals

Updated: May 23

Imagine a place so steeped in history and so vibrant with modern day living that you can experience the ancient and the modern at the same time all day every day. This is Greece, a nation of incredible history and tradition, the cradle of western civilisation, the birthplace of democracy, philosophy, science, physics, and of course, the Olympics.

Legend has it that when God made the earth, the stones that remained were used to build Greece. It is quite a rugged place but the civilisation that emerged from there was the most sophisticated of its time, and indeed has had a lasting legacy on the world.

Every step you take is on ancient and mystical land. This is the home of magnificent temples such as the Parthenon, the archaeological site of Delphi, the Temples of Apollo and Zeus, and the Colossus of Rhodes.

Greece also has an amazing 6,000 islands in its sovereign, some well-known, some very obscure. This is indeed a unique phenomenon for the continent of Europe. Only 227 of these islands are actually inhabited. But one thing is certain, they’re all amazingly beautiful. Many Greek beaches have been recognised by the Blue Flags of Europe Program which means they provide much more than just great swimming spaces. They are wonderful places to snorkel, scuba dive, windsurf and even ski.

The islands are an important characteristic of the Greek nation’s morphology and integral to its culture and traditions. These islands are not only stunning in their beauty but they are also home to unique archaeological sites. Some of the oldest European civilisations were developed on Greek islands and have a distinctive architectural heritage as well as some interesting local traditions.

A fascinating place to visit is the island of Delos. Nowhere else in the entire world does a natural, insular archaeological site of this size and importance exist. No other island on Earth hosts this many monumental, archaic antiquities. Delos, however, is not an open air museum. It is history itself. It is considered so sacred that no human can reside there. No-one will live or die there. Why? It is the birthplace of the immortals, the god Apollo and his twin sister, the goddess Artemis Selene. They are the twin gods of light and night, of male and female. This place is an ark of history and a UNESCO world heritage site.

A trip to Greece should be a must on everyone’s bucket list. This is the civilisation that has had the biggest and most important influence of our modern western societies. And if that isn’t enough for you, it’s an incredibly beautiful place to visit with a people whose hearts are as open and beautiful as the land that surrounds them.
